- HGV drivers face challenges accessing regular medical appointments.
- The clinic offered weight management and smoking cessation support.

In a unique partnership with the NHS, the Chippenham Pit Stop in Wiltshire has opened its doors to offer walk-in health clinics for HGV drivers. Nurses from Bath and North East Somerset Enhanced Medical Services, alongside the Wiltshire Health Improvement Hub, provided vital services including blood pressure checks and general health advice.
This initiative addresses the difficulties HGV drivers face in accessing healthcare due to their often extensive working hours away from home. Many drivers struggle to fit in GP appointments or attend to minor ailments promptly, leading to potential health issues being overlooked.
The health professionals focused on raising awareness about reducing salt intake and incorporating short bursts of exercise, even within the confines of a truck cab. They emphasized the importance of drivers knowing their health metrics, such as blood pressure, to prevent serious conditions like strokes and heart disease.
The award-winning Chippenham Pit Stop, located off junction 17 of the M4, is a comprehensive facility offering amenities for truckers. The NHS walk-in sessions are scheduled to return on May 20th, with options for advance booking or on-the-day attendance.
