27 May
Summary
- Patients Lesley Fraser and Jenny Morgan experienced repeated last-minute surgery cancellations.
- Both women have faced significant delays since 2024, causing pain and discomfort.
- Despite falling waiting lists, patient experiences highlight ongoing NHS challenges.

Patients Lesley Fraser and Jenny Morgan are speaking out about the significant distress caused by repeated last-minute cancellations of their surgeries. Lesley Fraser, a retired teacher from Stafford, has been waiting for spinal surgery at Royal Stoke Hospital since August 2024. Her operation was cancelled multiple times, most recently in April 2026, just before she was due to go into theatre. This has been described as "soul destroying" for Fraser, who was also diagnosed with gallstones, further complicating her care.
Similarly, Jenny Morgan, 74, from Lapworth, experienced cancellations for a tumor removal on her arm, scheduled for August 2025 and then again this month (May 2026). The tumour presses on nerves, affecting her finger movement. Her operations were called off due to issues with anaesthetic plans and administrative errors. These individual patient experiences highlight ongoing difficulties within the NHS, even as official figures show a reduction in waiting lists.
NHS England reported a decrease of 90,000 in waiting lists for operations in the Midlands, with 18,000 of those at University Hospitals Birmingham. Despite these national improvements, the personal impact on patients like Fraser and Morgan remains profound. The Department of Health acknowledged these experiences as "completely unacceptable" and a reminder of the challenges ahead, stating that no patient should endure such long waits.
