NHS Faces Crisis: 300,000 Ops Postponed Annually
24 Apr
Summary
- One in 10 English operations are cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice.
- Nearly 40% of these cancellations could be avoided, study finds.
- 300,000 operations are postponed annually, impacting millions waiting.

Research indicates that approximately one in ten planned surgeries in England are subject to last-minute cancellation or postponement. Data from 91 NHS trusts revealed that 10% of operations were cancelled with less than a day's notice, and 9% were postponed during pre-operative appointments. If these rates are consistent nationwide, it suggests around 300,000 procedures are affected each year.
The study, published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia, identified medical reasons, patient no-shows, overrun operating lists, and emergency admissions as common causes. Crucially, the research concluded that nearly 40% of these cancellations could have been avoided if issues had been flagged three to five days earlier.
Lead author Dr. James Bedford emphasized the need for earlier identification of health problems that could increase post-operative risks. This proactive approach could also facilitate offering slots to lower-risk patients when last-minute cancellations occur. Experts stress that overhauling clinical pathways with improved screening, flexible scheduling, and communication is essential to reduce waste and improve patient care.
