2 Aug
Summary
- Project teaches NHS staff photography and printing.
- It aims to shape perception of healthcare workers' lives.
- A short documentary will capture the creative initiative.

A pioneering project at Sunderland University is empowering NHS staff to express themselves through photography. Launched in 2022, the NHS Darkroom initiative provides clinical and non-clinical personnel with the skills to take and print their own images. This creative outlet aims to reshape public understanding of their demanding working lives.
Led by lecturer Johannah Churchill, a former NHS nurse, the project is now set to be documented in a short film. Churchill emphasizes that photography offers a powerful medium for staff to narrate their experiences in their own words. The initiative also fosters empathy by bridging connections between diverse life experiences.
For the first time this year, medical students from the university joined the project. Their work, alongside that of the healthcare staff, was showcased in a recent exhibition, highlighting the project's expanding reach and impact.
