NHS Nurse Dies Days After Being Sent Home with "Trapped Wind"
18 Nov
Summary
- NHS nurse died 3 days after being sent home from hospital
- Told her heart attack was "trapped wind" and sent home
- 9-year-old daughter found her collapsed on bedroom floor

On March 2024, a 47-year-old NHS nurse named Paula Ivers tragically passed away just 3 days after being sent home from Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester. Ivers had been experiencing "horrendous" chest pain that she described as "worse than childbirth" when she was previously taken to the hospital's A&E department.
However, despite her severe symptoms, Ivers was told the pain was "not coming from the heart" and was simply sent home with a recommendation to buy Gaviscon for what the doctors believed was trapped wind. Tragically, Ivers' 9-year-old daughter later discovered her collapsed on the bedroom floor after she suffered a fatal heart attack due to a tear in her aorta.
Ivers' family has now accused the hospital of failing to properly care for and diagnose the nurse, who had a family history of cardiac issues. Her partner, Simon Norbury, said they were "shocked" when Ivers was dismissed with indigestion, as she was clearly struggling to breathe when he took her to the hospital. The inquest into Ivers' death is still ongoing.
