NHS Delayed Reporting by Two Days Amid Meningitis Outbreak
25 Mar
Summary
- NHS delayed raising the alarm about a meningitis outbreak by two days.
- A hospital reported a case but waited for a formal diagnosis before alerting authorities.
- The delay hindered the crucial contact tracing process for the outbreak.

The UK Health Security Agency was alerted to a meningitis outbreak two days after a patient's arrival at the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate. The hospital initially reported the case on the afternoon of Friday, March 13th. However, the patient had been admitted two days earlier, on March 11th.
Despite a legal requirement for immediate reporting of such cases, there was a delay. The hospital stated it waited for a formal diagnosis confirmed by a test before alerting health officials.
This delay in reporting meant a missed opportunity to quickly trace close contacts and identify the potential for a wider outbreak. The East Kent Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, acknowledged the delay to the BBC.
