UK Faces National Crisis Over Crucial Medicine Access
5 Jul
Summary
- Over 1,500 medicine shortages reported in England recently.
- Patients like Pearl Butler experienced weeks without essential medication.
- Pharmacists urge action for stronger, consistent drug supply chains.

Pharmacies across England are warning of a national crisis due to widespread medicine shortages. Between May 2024 and April 2025, over 1,500 shortages were officially reported. These shortages are affecting a range of crucial medications, including those for epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, blood pressure, and digestive issues like Creon.
Patients are experiencing significant distress and health complications. Pearl Butler, who has epilepsy and Parkinson's, reported going weeks without necessary medication, leading to increased seizures and tremors. Karen Andrews, dependent on Creon for digestion, faced severe difficulties securing her medication, forcing her to take multiple lower-dose tablets.
Pharmacists are dedicating considerable time to managing these supply disruptions, diverting focus from patient care. The Royal College of Pharmacy is advocating for immediate measures to bolster supply chains and provide pharmacists with greater flexibility to manage prescriptions during shortages. The Department of Health and Social Care is investing in UK medicine manufacturing and consulting on allowing community pharmacies to make minor prescription amendments.
