26 Aug
Summary
- Women can order free HPV self-testing kits via NHS App.
- New program targets millions of women missing cervical screening.
- Home test checks for high-risk HPV, preventing cervical cancer.

The NHS is launching a major program to offer free HPV self-testing kits to millions of women in England who have missed previous cervical screening appointments. This initiative aims to significantly improve screening uptake and prevent cervical cancer. The program begins with women aged 30 to 65 who have not attended screening after previous invitations, with a phased rollout planned.
Eligible women will be contacted by the NHS and can order a kit through the NHS App or their online account. The home test involves a simple vaginal swab, which is sent to an NHS lab to check for high-risk HPV. If detected, a follow-up appointment with a healthcare professional will be scheduled.
This new approach is described as a 'gamechanger' by Dr. Sue Mann, National Clinical Director for Women's Health at NHS England, highlighting its potential to overcome barriers like embarrassment or lack of time. Cancer Research UK and The Eve Appeal also support the initiative, viewing it as a vital step towards eliminating cervical cancer by 2040.
Latest figures show nearly four million women in England are not up-to-date with cervical screening, with only 68.8% attending appointments. This program follows research indicating self-testing can significantly boost participation, potentially increasing screened numbers by 400,000 annually. Clinician-led screening remains the primary method, but these home kits offer a crucial additional option for those who have missed appointments.
