Home HPV Tests: NHS Tackles Screening Gap by 2026
23 Jan
Summary
- Over 5 million women in England are overdue for cervical screenings.
- Self-sample HPV test kits will be offered from early 2026.
- New kits aim to overcome barriers like anxiety and time constraints.

In England, over five million eligible women are currently overdue for their routine cervical screenings, a critical test that can prevent thousands of deaths annually. Attendance rates are particularly low among younger age groups, with less than 66.1% of those aged 25 to 49 having kept up with their appointments.
To combat this, the NHS will introduce self-sampling HPV test kits starting in early 2026. This program will initially prioritize women who are most behind on their screenings. These home testing kits are intended to tackle deeply entrenched barriers, offering a private and convenient alternative for individuals who face challenges attending traditional appointments due to anxiety, shame, or logistical issues like inflexible work schedules and childcare needs.
The introduction of these self-testing kits is a key strategy in the NHS's broader goal to eradicate cervical cancer. While HPV vaccination rates are increasing, some individuals mistakenly believe the vaccine eliminates the need for screening. The self-test kits will detect HPV, the primary cause of cervical cancer. Those testing positive will require follow-up clinical screening, acknowledging that not all attendance barriers will be removed by this new method.
