NHS Trust Probes Dementia Bedspace Cuts
4 Sep
Summary
- Trust trials reducing dementia beds from 34 to 21.
- Current demand is reflected in the reduced bed numbers.
- A long-term review may lead to full ward closure.
An NHS trust is currently investigating the possibility of permanently reducing the number of inpatient bedspaces allocated to dementia patients. Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust is trialling a reduction from 34 to 21 beds across Sunderland and Northumberland.
This trial aims to align service provision with current demand. A spokesperson indicated that bedspaces could be increased if needed during the trial period. This evaluation is a precursor to a long-term service review.
This review may ultimately lead to the complete closure of the trust's Northumberland ward. The trust acknowledges that some patients with conditions like Alzheimer's require inpatient care when community or home settings are insufficient.
