NHS Blood Tests Strike Halts Patient Care
21 Aug
Summary
- Blood scientists' strike impacting patient care since June.
- GPs struggle with routine blood tests due to strike.
- Union demands holiday pay calculation changes for all.

Blood scientists in East Lancashire, members of the Unite union, have continued their strike action since June. The protest, centered at Royal Blackburn and Burnley General hospitals, initially concerned holiday pay disputes. This action has now escalated to include the withdrawal of urgent and emergency blood test cover.
The health trust is utilizing other staff to cover essential tests. However, GPs at 68 practices have reported significant difficulties in obtaining routine blood tests for their patients. One nurse associate noted her practice was operating at half capacity, with bookings constantly changing due to the analysis delays.
The union is demanding that holiday pay calculations, recently backed by a tribunal for one employee, be applied to all affected workers. Unite regional officers expressed frustration, stating that employer negotiations have been unproductive despite repeated attempts to resolve the dispute. The union indicates the workers are dismayed by the prolonged nature of the industrial action.
