One Leg Symptom? Call 111 for Blood Clot Risk
22 Feb
Summary
- A single leg symptom may indicate a dangerous blood clot.
- Deep vein thrombosis can cause leg pain, swelling, and even be fatal.
- NHS advises calling 111 for leg symptoms, 999 for severe signs.

The NHS is urging the public to call 111 upon noticing a serious symptom in only one leg, as it may signify a blood clot. Such clots, known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), can obstruct circulation and pose life-threatening risks including strokes and heart attacks.
Symptoms typically involve throbbing pain in the calf or thigh, rarely affecting both legs. Additional signs can include swelling and warmth. If severe symptoms like breathlessness and chest pain manifest, indicating a potential pulmonary embolism, immediate emergency services (999 or A&E) are required.
Several factors elevate the risk of developing blood clots, including age over 60, obesity, smoking, and hormone therapies. Extended periods of immobility, long journeys, pregnancy, and dehydration also increase susceptibility. While some clots form without obvious cause, preventive measures can reduce risk.
Treatment for diagnosed blood clots may involve anticoagulant medication like warfarin or, in some cases, surgical intervention to remove or prevent clots. The NHS stresses that driving oneself to the hospital is not advised; individuals should seek assistance from others or call for an ambulance.
