Sandwich Generation's Health Crisis: NHS Alert
7 Sep
Summary
- Nearly 80% of 40-54 year olds neglect their health for others.
- High blood pressure often silent, major cause of heart attack.
- Many adults unaware of their blood pressure readings.

A recent survey highlights that almost 80% of adults aged 40-54 in the South West frequently neglect their own health needs to prioritize others. This demographic, often referred to as the 'sandwich generation,' experiences significant stress, with September being a particularly challenging month due to work, family routines, and financial pressures.
The NHS is issuing a warning as this self-neglect can jeopardize their health, especially concerning high blood pressure. This condition, a major contributor to heart attacks and strokes, often presents no symptoms. Alarmingly, a significant majority of those surveyed were unaware of their own blood pressure readings.
Health leaders emphasize that checking blood pressure is a simple yet crucial step in preventing serious cardiovascular events. Lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, smoking, and alcohol consumption can increase blood pressure. Adults aged 40-74 are advised to monitor their blood pressure regularly, with checks available at pharmacies and GP practices.
