CTE Plagues Ex-NFL Stars: Study Reveals Stark Reality

A concerning study released recently indicates that a significant portion of former NFL players are affected by chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Between 2016 and 2021, at least 25% of deceased ex-NFL players who donated their brains had CTE, a rate substantially higher than in the general population.
Further findings highlighted that over 60% of these players with CTE also met clinical criteria for dementia, with severe cases showing a stronger association. This progressive brain disease, only definitively diagnosed post-mortem, has prompted calls for increased research and revised prevention efforts focusing on reducing repetitive head impacts, not solely concussions.
The NFL stated its commitment to player safety and provided resources for former players concerned about their health. However, the study's lead author stressed the urgent need for resources dedicated to finding a cure for CTE.
