A newborn from Tripura received a life-saving surgery in Kolkata for a rare congenital malignant tumor discovered on her chest wall. Doctors at Narayana Hospital Howrah performed the critical operation when the baby was just 12 days old. The tumor was significantly compressing her left lung, creating a life-threatening situation.
The medical team, comprising specialists in pediatric surgery, obstetrics, neonatology, and pediatric intensive care, collaborated to address the complex condition. After a safe delivery, the baby experienced respiratory distress. The surgical team waited 11 days for her to stabilize before proceeding with the removal of the tumor, which was identified as congenital embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma.
This extremely rare soft-tissue cancer present at birth has been reported in only 15-20 newborns worldwide. The baby underwent post-operative intensive care and has since been discharged. While she is recovering well and growing, she will require ongoing follow-up and potential further treatment to prevent recurrence.
