Miracle Baby Survives Rare Lung Condition
5 Feb
Summary
- Newborn Esme struggled to breathe due to meconium aspiration.
- An ECMO machine was flown 100 miles to save the infant's life.
- Baby Esme is now thriving and unaffected by the near-fatal event.

A newborn named Esme experienced severe breathing difficulties shortly after birth due to meconium aspiration, a dangerous condition where a baby inhales meconium into their lungs. The medical team prepared her parents for the possibility of her not surviving, as her condition was critical.
To provide life support, doctors arranged for an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine, a rare and advanced treatment, to be transported 100 miles. This machine successfully oxygenated Esme's blood, bypassing her lungs and enabling a remarkable recovery.
Within three weeks, Esme was discharged from the hospital and has since thrived. Her father is now running a 100-mile ultra marathon to raise funds for Heart Link, the charity that supported their family and funds ECMO machines.
