New Waterford Health Hub: 8 Years Later, Still No Ground Broken

Eight years after its announcement, construction has yet to commence on a new health-care complex intended to replace the aging New Waterford Consolidated Hospital. Built in 1963, the current facility faces significant issues with its infrastructure, including plumbing and climate control, making it a challenging environment for both staff and patients. Doctors have highlighted these deficiencies, noting that the deteriorating conditions impede efforts to recruit new medical professionals to the community.

Physicians like Dr. Emmanuel Ajuwon, who has practiced in New Waterford for twelve years, are growing weary of the persistent delays. He indicated that a further postponement or cancellation of the project could lead him to leave the community. The new health hub was initially promised by the Liberal government in 2018, alongside a new high school and community wellness centre that have since been completed. Community members and healthcare providers are now urging the current provincial government to fulfill the commitment.

Frustrated by vague communication, a group representing physicians and residents is requesting a meeting with the Health Minister and other officials. They seek a clear update on the project's status, whether it proceeds or is cancelled. Despite inquiries, the Department of Health and Wellness had not provided further comment by the deadline.
