New Hospital Unit to Ease ER Wait Times
21 Jul
Summary
- A new urgent treatment centre will open next year.
- It aims to reduce wait times for non-life-threatening emergencies.
- The facility will ease pressure on the main emergency department.

James Paget Hospital in Gorleston plans to launch a new urgent treatment centre in spring 2027. This facility is designed to assess patients presenting with emergency illnesses and conditions that are not immediately life-threatening.
Subject to planning permission, construction is slated to commence in autumn. The initiative aims to provide timely care in the appropriate setting for individuals with less severe emergencies.
Ben Pritchard-Jones, director of operations, stated the centre will expedite the right care for patients. This will also significantly ease the strain on the main emergency department, enhancing the overall patient journey.
The hospital currently triages all emergency department attendees to prioritize the most critical cases. However, this process can result in extended waiting periods for patients with less urgent concerns.
