J&J Launches Vision-Changing IOL in India
12 Mar
Summary
- New TECNIS Odyssey IOL provides continuous vision range.
- It aims to significantly reduce patient dependence on glasses.
- The lens corrects presbyopia during cataract surgery.

Advancements in intraocular lens (IOL) technology are transforming cataract surgery outcomes, with newer lenses designed to offer clearer vision across various distances and mitigate age-related conditions like presbyopia. Patients are increasingly seeking solutions that minimize reliance on eyeglasses post-surgery.
Johnson & Johnson has responded to this demand by launching its TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL in India. This full visual range lens promises continuous, high-quality vision, allowing clear sight from far to near and intermediate distances. It is built upon the established TECNIS platform, utilizing advanced optics and proprietary materials for consistent, high-contrast vision.
According to Burzin Shahana, Country Manager for Surgical Vision India and South Asia at Johnson & Johnson, the TECNIS Odyssey™ IOL addresses a critical need for spectacle independence among cataract patients. Its introduction in India broadens access to IOL technology that delivers continuous vision quality. This launch strengthens J&J's portfolio, complementing existing offerings like TECNIS PureSee.
The need for such technology is underscored by the projection that 94 million people aged 50 and over may experience vision impairment correctable by lens replacement surgery. Presbyopia, a condition making close-up focus difficult, typically emerges around age 40 and is a common target for correction during cataract surgery. The TECNIS platform celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, reflecting a quarter-century of innovation in replicating natural eye optics.
