A new postbiotic supplement, Qi601, has been developed to combat the absorption of microplastics in the human body. Created from heat-inactivated bacteria, its unique surface structure effectively binds to tiny plastic particles within the digestive tract, facilitating their removal from the body.
In a recent study, participants took the supplement after chewing gum, a known microplastic source. Qi601 demonstrated a remarkable 87.6% increase in microplastic capture within the mouth. Further laboratory tests simulating the digestive process showed that approximately 98% of plastic particles remained attached to the postbiotic throughout the saliva, stomach, and intestinal phases.
The supplement, Qi601, is derived from heat-inactivated Lactobacillus fermentum aggregates. The manufacturer states it creates a protective shield that physically traps microplastics and nanoplastics, preventing them from interacting with the gut lining. The bacterial strain has received Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Adults are advised to take one capsule daily with water. However, the manufacturer recommends that children, pregnant individuals, and breastfeeding mothers consult a healthcare provider before use.
