Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) has introduced the ThuLEP procedure, a new, minimally invasive laser surgery for men experiencing symptoms of an enlarged prostate. This advanced technique, thulium Laser Enucleation of the prostate, is a significant improvement over older surgical options.
The state-of-the-art ThuLEP procedure is expected to yield better patient outcomes, including shorter hospital stays and reduced time with catheters. Dr. Haider Abed, a urologist at WRH, highlighted that Windsor is now the third healthcare center in Ontario to offer this innovative treatment. As of last month, Dr. Abed has already performed 16 cases, with patients reporting excellent results and being completely catheter-free.
More than 50 ThuLEP cases are anticipated in the first year at WRH. The hospital has already seen a substantial waitlist, with referrals from London and Hamilton, indicating a strong demand for this procedure. This advancement reduces the need for patients to travel to Toronto for treatment, which was previously a challenge for many, especially older individuals.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition affecting aging men, creating a significant demand for urological services. The ThuLEP procedure is suitable for men experiencing symptoms like weak urine stream, frequent nighttime urination, or reliance on a catheter due to an enlarged prostate, which can range from 50 to 300 grams.
