New Homes for Cured Mental Health Patients

On Friday, 49 individuals who had successfully completed treatment at the Government Mental Health Centre (MHC) in Peroorkada were rehabilitated into a new life. Having no families to return to, these individuals found a home at Gandhi Bhavan in Pathanapuram, thanks to a humanitarian initiative by Lions District 318 A.

Health Minister K. Muraleedharan flagged off the bus that transported the residents, who were provided with new clothes and personal belongings. This marks the first time such a large group from the MHC has been simultaneously rehabilitated. Psychiatric social workers and legal authorities at MHC attempt to reunite patients with their families, but this often proves difficult.

According to reports from the High Court, 55 individuals were awaiting rehabilitation. Those who received medical fitness certificates have now been accommodated at Gandhi Bhavan, which has undertaken the lifelong care of these individuals. The Lions District 318 A will continue to monitor their progress and ensure they remain on maintenance medication.

Speaking at the event, Minister Muraleedharan expressed regret over society's unchanged outlook towards those recovering from mental illness. He assured that the government would enhance facilities at all MHCs, prioritizing the welfare of patients with mental illnesses.

These rehabilitated individuals have vocational training from the MHC's "Pakal Veedu" (day-care centre) and are prepared for integration into a vocational rehabilitation program.
