Summary
- A 33-year-old man survived cardiac arrest while driving on July 21.
- He received an Extravascular Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator.
- The new EV-ICD offers advanced heart monitoring and electrical signals.

Cameron Mair, 33, is the first patient at University Hospital Coventry to benefit from a new Extravascular Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (EV-ICD). This occurred after he experienced a cardiac arrest while driving over Clopton Bridge in Stratford-upon-Avon on July 21. He was pulled from his car by a passerby who administered CPR, while restaurant employees nearby provided a defibrillator.
The EV-ICD is an advanced device that monitors heart rhythms and can deliver electrical signals to correct abnormalities. Unlike traditional ICDs where wires enter the heart, the EV-ICD's wire is placed outside the heart and blood vessels, reducing the risk of long-term complications. Mair, who has two young sons, stated the procedure has given him a second chance at life.
He received treatment from Consultant Cardiologist Dr. Ven Lim, who noted that EV-ICDs are a new technology available at only a few UK centers. Mair expressed his appreciation for the hospital staff and feels optimistic about returning to a normal life.
