New Tech Finds Missed Eggs in Fertility Treatment
12 Feb
Summary
- Automated device found additional eggs in over half of patients.
- A successful pregnancy resulted from an egg recovered by the new device.
- The technology sifts through follicular fluid previously discarded.

A groundbreaking automated device, OvaReady, is revolutionizing fertility treatments by recovering eggs that were previously missed during conventional microscopic examination. This microfluidic technology sifts through follicular fluid, a byproduct of egg retrieval that is typically discarded, finding additional eggs in over 50% of patients. This discovery has surprised fertility experts, who previously believed this step was highly efficient.
The study, published in Nature Medicine, reported that the device recovered 582 extra eggs from 316 patients. In a significant development, a successful pregnancy and live birth in September resulted from an embryo created using an egg recovered by this new technology. The couple, who had struggled with infertility, expressed renewed hope after participating in the study.
Developed by AutoIVF, the OvaReady device aims to increase efficiency and standardization in egg isolation. While larger studies are needed to confirm its impact on live birth rates, experts acknowledge the technology's promise. The device is currently available for research, with discussions underway for FDA approval for broader clinical use.
