New Drug Melts Fat by Killing Cells
18 Oct
Summary
- New drug CBL-514 safely kills fat cells instead of shrinking them.
- Early trials show reduction in both subcutaneous and visceral fat.
- Combination therapy with GLP-1 drugs may prevent weight regain.

Early clinical trials have reported promising results for a new fat reduction treatment called CBL-514. This innovative drug, administered via injection, works by safely causing fat cells to self-destruct, a process known as apoptosis, rather than merely shrinking them.
Two phase 2 clinical trials demonstrated CBL-514's efficacy in reducing subcutaneous fat. Further analysis of a subset of participants indicated a significant reduction in visceral fat, which is stored around organs, after up to 12 weeks of treatment. This offers potential health benefits beyond cosmetic improvements.
Research also suggests that CBL-514, when combined with GLP-1 drugs like tirzepatide, may help prevent weight regain. Animal studies showed that rats treated with both medications lost more weight and regained less after treatment cessation. Larger human trials are planned to further assess its long-term effects and health impacts.
