Breakthrough Vaccine Targets Deadly Diseases
9 Jun
Summary
- New vaccine trial shows promise for Lassa fever and rabies.
- Dual vaccine is safe and induces immune responses in healthy adults.
- Freeze-dried vaccine could aid distribution in remote areas.

Researchers have reported encouraging trial results for a new vaccine designed to combat both Lassa fever and rabies, diseases responsible for tens of thousands of deaths annually, particularly in parts of Western and Sub-Saharan Africa. Lassa fever, a rodent-transmitted viral hemorrhagic disease with no current vaccine, affects an estimated 300,000 people yearly in West Africa, causing 5,000 deaths. It is especially perilous during pregnancy. Rabies, which is nearly always fatal once symptoms appear, also burdens regions where Lassa fever is common.
The novel dual vaccine has demonstrated safety and efficacy in inducing immune responses against both viruses in a recent trial involving 54 healthy US adults. Participants received two doses 28 days apart, with no serious reactions reported. The vaccine's ability to be freeze-dried for storage is a significant advantage, facilitating its delivery to areas with limited cold-chain infrastructure. This innovation is timely as climate change is predicted to expand the reach of Lassa fever, potentially putting hundreds of millions at risk.
