Summary
- Gregory Maassen diagnosed with rare small-fiber neuropathy.
- E-bikes proved crucial for his recovery and mobility.
- He raised over $179,000 on a cross-country e-bike trip.
Gregory Maassen, diagnosed with small-fiber neuropathy, found relief and a new passion through cycling after suffering from severe burning pain for months. His neurologist, Ahmet Hoke, recommended exercise, which Maassen initially doubted due to his extreme fatigue and soreness. He found an e-bike to be a viable solution, helping him regain strength and reduce pain.
Inspired by his own recovery, Maassen embarked on a remarkable 4,685-mile e-bike journey from D.C. to San Francisco in 2022. This trip not only showcased his personal triumph over illness but also served as a significant fundraising effort, garnering over $179,000 for neuropathy research.
Maassen has continued his advocacy, recently completing a 7,250-mile ride from Florida to Los Angeles, raising an additional $31,500 for Johns Hopkins Medicine's neuropathy center. He plans to conclude his long-distance cycling fundraising efforts but remains committed to supporting neuropathy research.
