In a significant advancement for healthcare in northeast India, the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong has successfully conducted a unilateral biportal endoscopic (UBE) spine surgery. This marks the first UBE discectomy performed within a government healthcare institution in the region.
The patient, originating from Assam, had a lumbar disc prolapse causing significant nerve compression. UBE surgery, a minimally invasive technique, utilizes small incisions and an endoscope to provide a magnified view of spinal structures. This approach minimizes disruption to surrounding tissues compared to traditional open surgeries.
NEIGRIHMS director Prof. Nalin Mehta emphasized that the introduction of UBE spine surgery represents a leap forward in accessing advanced endoscopic procedures within the public healthcare sector in the northeast. He stated this milestone underscores NEIGRIHMS' commitment to integrating modern surgical technologies and making them accessible to patients closer to their homes.
The groundbreaking surgery was carried out by the orthopaedics department, led by Dr. Sachlang Debbarma, and guided by departmental head Prof. (Dr.) Bhaskar Borgohain, highlighting the collaborative expertise at the institution.
