As of August 15th, 2025, Americans in 34 states can now get their seasonal flu vaccine at home. European drugmaker AstraZeneca has launched the FluMist Home, a nasal spray vaccine that can be ordered online and self-administered.
Previously, the FluMist vaccine was only available at pharmacies or doctors' offices. This new at-home option is being hailed as a "transformational moment in the evolution of influenza protection." Eligible adults aged 18 to 49 can order the spray, which is stored in the refrigerator until use. The vaccine can also be given to children and teens between 2 and 17 years old.
While the FluMist may not prevent infection in everyone, it works similarly to vaccines for measles and chickenpox, triggering the immune system in the nose and throat. The most common side effects are a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, and fever. AstraZeneca hopes to expand the at-home availability to all 48 contiguous states in future flu seasons.
This announcement comes after the worst flu season in 15 years, driven by factors like the spread of H5N1 bird flu, COVID-19, and declining vaccination rates. Experts say this new, convenient option could help boost protection, especially among younger populations.
