NE PA Heart Disease Death Rates Decline, Still Above Average

Northeastern Pennsylvania has seen a reduction in heart disease death rates from 2022 to 2023, a trend also observed statewide. Despite this progress, the region's heart disease mortality remains higher than the Pennsylvania average, attributed to lifestyle factors and a larger elderly demographic. Cancer continues to be a significant cause of death, with an increase in deaths noted in Lackawanna, Luzerne, and Wayne counties between 2022 and 2023, even as long-term trends show declines in some areas.

Long-term care presents a growing challenge, with costs escalating despite stable facility availability. Ensuring access to diverse care options, including home-based services, is becoming increasingly critical. Hospital affordability is also a concern, marked by rising private room rates in certain counties. Emergency room visits have generally decreased, though admission rates vary.

Children's health metrics reveal mixed outcomes. Infant mortality has improved in Lackawanna County, while mortality among children under five has dropped significantly over the last decade in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties, though Luzerne saw a recent increase. Lead exposure remains an issue, particularly in areas with aging infrastructure, with Lackawanna County showing a high share of tested children with elevated blood lead levels.
