Contagion Countdown: Decoding the Stages of the Common Cold
11 Nov
Summary
- Viruses can live on surfaces and spread easily through coughs and sneezes
- Symptoms worsen over 4-5 days before recovery begins
- Maintaining good hygiene and getting vaccinated can help prevent illness

As of November 11th, 2025, the winter virus season is in full swing, and many are struggling to avoid the dreaded flu or common cold. According to Dr. Cheryl Lythgoe of Benenden Health, the common cold is caused by a virus that can be picked up anywhere and easily spread through coughs and sneezes.
In the first 1-3 days, individuals may have a slight sniffle or poor hand hygiene, but not yet exhibit full-blown symptoms. Days 3-4 typically bring on congestion and a runny nose, and this is when the virus is most contagious. The peak of illness occurs on days 4-5, with coughing, headaches, body aches, and fatigue.
Fortunately, most people start recovering after day 5, though it can take 2-3 weeks for some to fully regain their strength, especially those with weakened immune systems or underlying conditions. To prevent catching a cold, Dr. Lythgoe recommends regular handwashing, covering coughs, avoiding touching the face, and getting a flu vaccination, which can be obtained for around $10-15 at local pharmacies.
