Nature's influence on eating habits revealed
16 Oct
Summary
- Nature contact may shape people's eating habits.
- Nature indirectly linked to intuitive eating via body appreciation.
- Access to nature could support healthier eating behaviors.

Exposure to nature appears to influence dietary habits, with research suggesting green environments can foster more positive body relationships. A study led by Anglia Ruskin University surveyed participants on their nature interactions, body image, self-compassion, and connection to the natural world. While a direct link to 'intuitive eating' wasn't found, nature exposure was indirectly associated through higher levels of body appreciation and self-compassion.
These findings provide initial evidence for pathways connecting nature contact to eating patterns, which have psychological and physical benefits. Professor Viren Swami noted that greater access to nature could aid public health efforts in promoting healthier, sustainable eating. The study, however, acknowledged limitations such as reliance on self-reported data, and called for further international research.
