A new era for dental education in India has begun with the constitution of the National Dental Commission (NDC) and its three supporting autonomous boards. This landmark reform, effective March 19, 2026, officially replaces the Dental Council of India (DCI) and repeals the Dentists Act of 1948. The government has appointed Dr. Sanjay Tewari as the Chairperson and Dr. Mousumi Goswami as a Part-Time Member of the NDC.
The NDC is established to significantly improve the quality of dental education and align it with global standards. To facilitate its operations, three autonomous bodies have been formed: the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Dental Education Board, the Dental Assessment and Rating Board, and the Ethics and Dental Registration Board. These bodies will focus on education oversight, institutional assessment, and professional conduct, respectively.
This regulatory overhaul signifies a move towards a more transparent, quality-driven, and accountable system. The NDC is poised to implement crucial reforms, enhance access to affordable oral healthcare, and promote research, marking a decisive shift from the previous elected structure towards a system focused on continuous improvement and accountability in dental services nationwide.
