Mystery Seafood Deaths: Algal Toxin Suspected
18 Feb
Summary
- Officials suspect marine algal toxins may have contaminated seafood.
- Postmortem reports showed no signs of typical food poisoning.
- Samples of fish and seafood have been sent for toxicology studies.

Food Safety authorities are exploring the possibility of marine algal toxins contaminating seafood as the cause of death for two individuals in Vizhinjam. These individuals fell ill after consuming seafood at a local restaurant. Initial postmortem reports have not indicated conventional food poisoning. Three other family members who also consumed the seafood are currently stable and receiving hospital care.
Further investigation is underway as the exact cause remains unclear, especially since not everyone who dined at the restaurant became ill. Samples from the restaurant, including mussels, prawns, and squid, have been sent for toxicology analysis to CIFT. The seafood suspected in the incident was reportedly procured from Muttam in Tamil Nadu, and authorities there have been alerted.
Officials are consulting with Fisheries authorities to determine if specific fishing areas should be avoided or if alerts need to be issued to fishermen. Results from initial sample studies are expected soon, while the toxicology studies at CIFT may take longer.
