Dim Lights May Harm Eyesight
27 Feb
Summary
- Myopia risk increases by 80% with heavy screen use.
- Dim indoor lighting might be a contributing factor to myopia.
- Outdoor light may promote healthy eye development.

Nearsightedness, or myopia, is a global health concern, with projections indicating that almost half the world's population could be affected by 2050. Research has established a strong link between extensive use of digital devices and an increased risk of developing myopia. This risk is reportedly 80% higher when prolonged screen time is combined with significant computer usage.
A recent study from SUNY College of Optometry proposes that dim indoor lighting might also play a crucial role in the development of myopia. The hypothesis suggests that when individuals focus on close-up tasks in low-light conditions, the pupil constricts. This constriction can significantly reduce the amount of light reaching the retina.
Researchers theorize that this reduced retinal illumination may send a signal for the eyeball to grow longer, a primary cause of myopia. In contrast, ample light exposure, such as that found outdoors, ensures the retina receives a strong signal, thereby supporting healthy eye development even during close-up focusing activities.
While the study offers a testable hypothesis, its authors acknowledge limitations, including a small participant group. Further research is needed to fully understand the complex interplay between visual habits, lighting conditions, and eye growth.
