Mum's 'Hot Flushes' Revealed as 10 Brain Tumours
24 Mar
Summary
- Symptoms mistaken for menopause led to delayed diagnosis.
- Ten brain tumours were discovered, with five surgically removed.
- Two previously treated tumours have begun to regrow.

A woman's initial symptoms, including fatigue and slurred speech, were initially misattributed to menopause. Two years into experiencing these issues, her eyesight began to deteriorate. An optician's referral led to an MRI scan, which revealed swelling behind her eye and indicated the presence of four brain tumours. During surgery in July 2019, doctors discovered a total of ten meningioma brain tumours. Five were surgically removed, while the remaining five were placed under active surveillance.
In the years following the surgery, she continued to experience seizures and lost sight in one eye because a tumour pressed on her optic nerve. Most recently, at a follow-up consultation, she was informed that two of the tumours had started to regrow, prompting her to begin radiotherapy. The organization Brain Tumour Research highlighted how symptoms can be mistaken for common ailments, causing diagnostic delays and underscoring the urgent need for research funding.
