Aimee James is determined to ensure her 10-year-old daughter, Evie, experiences a happy and adventurous life, even with a rare brain condition. Evie suffers from subependymal grey matter heterotopia, a severe disorder affecting only 500 people worldwide, which has left her with the developmental age of a two-year-old and causes prolonged, debilitating seizures.
Diagnosed at age five after years of struggling to identify the cause of her developmental delays and episodes, Evie now requires constant supervision. Doctors are considering a Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) device, similar to a pacemaker for the brain, to help control her seizures and improve her quality of life.
Despite acknowledging Evie may never have a typical childhood, Aimee cherishes moments like a recent school trip to Disneyland Paris. To further support her daughter's well-being and raise awareness, Aimee is training to run the London Marathon next April for Roald Dahl's Marvellous Children's Charity, which has provided invaluable nursing support and financial aid for family activities.
