Mumbai's Viral Surge: Flu, Covid, RSV Strike Before Monsoon

Mumbai is currently witnessing a surge in viral infections, with Covid-19, H1N1, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) circulating simultaneously. Doctors have noted a recent increase in Covid cases after H1N1 had been prevalent for nearly a month. Pathological laboratories are detecting multiple positive cases daily for Covid and H1N1. Patients are presenting with symptoms such as high fever and respiratory issues. While these viral illnesses are causing concern, the current Covid infections are not considered severe. However, the elderly and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are advised to take precautions.

Experts attribute the ongoing viral activity partly to the current weather conditions, including high humidity. The delayed arrival of the monsoon is also suspected to be a factor, potentially allowing respiratory viruses to persist longer than usual. Historically, Covid-19 caused widespread illness in India between 2020 and 2022, and H1N1 has continued to cause outbreaks, sometimes requiring extensive hospitalization. It is anticipated that these viral cases may decrease once the monsoon season begins.
