Two families in Mumbai have given the gift of life through organ and tissue donation, saving six lives. The first donation occurred on June 29 at Wockhardt Hospital, Mira Road, from a 28-year-old BARC technician who suffered a fatal head injury in an accident. His heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys were retrieved, alongside bone donation.
The second deceased organ donation was recorded on June 30 at Fortis Hospital, Mulund. A 37-year-old IT engineer's liver, corneas, and skin were donated after he was declared brain dead following deteriorating health. These two acts of generosity bring Mumbai's total deceased organ donations for 2026 to 35.
Despite an observed improvement in organ donation rates and increased public awareness, the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) highlighted a critical need. Mumbai has a waiting list of 5,073 patients for organ transplants, with thousands more registered, emphasizing the continued demand for donors.
