Summary
- 716 abortions recorded for girls under 19 in Mumbai last year.
- Contraceptive issues cited as primary reason for most abortions.
- Total of 20,950 MTP procedures were performed citywide.

In Mumbai, at least 716 abortions were performed on girls under 19 years old between April 2024 and March 2025. This data, obtained through an RTI request, also revealed a total of 20,950 Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) procedures in the city during that period.
The primary reason cited for these MTPs was contraceptive failure or inadequate use, accounting for the overwhelming majority of cases where reasons were recorded. However, a senior BMC health official cautioned against attributing all cases solely to contraceptive failure, suggesting factors like incorrect usage, lack of understanding, or social stigma may influence reporting.
Women aged 25-29 years represented the largest demographic for abortions, followed by the 30-34 and 20-24 age groups. Other recorded reasons included danger to the mother's life or mental health, pregnancies resulting from rape, and potential fetal abnormalities. Spontaneous abortions, or miscarriages, also numbered 4,226 during the same timeframe.
Ward-wise data indicated K-West ward had the highest number of MTP cases. Religion-wise, Hindu women accounted for the largest proportion of abortions, followed by Muslim women.
