A mother's persistent advocacy has been crucial in obtaining necessary medical care for her 20-month-old son, Louie-James, who has faced significant health challenges. Jordan Penfold described her "frustrating" experience with local hospitals, where her son's respiratory issues were repeatedly attributed to viral infections. Louie spent over three-quarters of his young life in and out of hospital, struggling with oxygen levels and receiving questionable advice regarding his care.
Louie-James has since been transferred to the Evelina Children's Hospital in London. There, he was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and tracheomalacia, a condition where his windpipe is severely floppy, increasing the risk of collapse. He also battled a lung infection. The family is currently at the respiratory high dependency unit, where Louie is on CPAP treatment and has been for three weeks as of March 30, 2026.
The family has established a GoFundMe to manage the financial strain of their extended hospital stay, with any surplus donations to be given to the hospital. Jordan emphasized the importance of parents trusting their instincts and seeking second opinions when advocating for their children's health. Louie, despite facing a rare genetic condition (Jacob syndrome), tracheomalacia, and global developmental delay, remains a happy and smiling child.
