27 Feb
Summary
- England saw 56 mpox cases in January 2026.
- 47 mpox cases recorded in first two weeks of February 2026.
- Mpox vaccine is routinely available as part of sexual healthcare.

Mpox cases have seen an increase in England during the early part of 2026. Official figures show that 56 cases of mpox clade 2b were reported in January. This trend continued into February, with 47 recorded cases during the first two weeks.
Health officials emphasize that mpox, an unpleasant illness transmissible through close contact, has not disappeared. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) notes that while transmission increases are possible, high vaccination coverage among eligible individuals is expected to prevent another large outbreak.
The mpox vaccine is now routinely offered as part of sexual healthcare services, alongside other testing and vaccinations. Dr. Katy Sinka, Head of Sexually Transmitted Infections at UKHSA, highlighted the vaccine as a key tool for protection, reducing the chances of severe illness. Both doses are recommended for maximum efficacy.
Symptoms of mpox can include fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen glands, and exhaustion, often preceding a rash that may appear on any part of the body. While typically mild and resolving within weeks, severe cases may require hospitalization.
