Hidden Health Clues in Your Mouth Ulcers

Summary
- Mouth ulcers can signal deficiencies in iron, zinc, or B vitamins.
- Persistent ulcers over three weeks may indicate underlying conditions.
- Stress, diet, and genetics can also contribute to recurring ulcers.

Mouth ulcers, while commonly painful and inconvenient, can sometimes serve as indicators of more significant health concerns. Pharmaceutical expert Dipa Kamdar highlights that these sores, which affect up to a quarter of the population, are often benign and self-healing within a fortnight.
Most mouth ulcers arise from minor mouth injuries, dietary irritations, stress, or hormonal changes. However, Kamdar emphasizes that persistent or recurrent ulcers may signal deficiencies in essential nutrients like iron, zinc, folate, B vitamins, or vitamin D. Underlying conditions such as coeliac disease, Crohn's disease, or a compromised immune system can also manifest as mouth ulcers.
Kamdar suggests that individuals experiencing frequent or unusually persistent mouth ulcers should consult their General Practitioner (GP). A GP can order blood tests to identify potential deficiencies and recommend appropriate supplements. She also notes that certain medications can trigger ulcer formation.
While simple remedies like saltwater rinses and over-the-counter topical treatments can provide relief, Kamdar strongly advises medical consultation if an ulcer persists beyond three weeks or exhibits unusual characteristics. Such persistent sores could, in rare instances, be a sign of serious conditions, including mouth cancer, underscoring the importance of not ignoring persistent oral discomfort.
