Weight Loss Jabs May Harm Birth Control
16 Aug
Summary
- Mounjaro can reduce oral contraceptive effectiveness.
- Use barrier methods for four weeks after starting Mounjaro.
- Diarrhea and vomiting can also impact pill absorption.

Women starting the weight loss medication Mounjaro are urged to adopt different contraception methods, as it may reduce the effectiveness of oral birth control. Official guidance recommends using barrier methods, such as condoms, in addition to oral pills for at least four weeks after initiating Mounjaro. This precaution is also advised for four weeks following any dosage increase.
The medication's effect on slowing stomach emptying can hinder the absorption of oral contraceptives. Consequently, women should consider supplementing their regimen or switching to non-oral forms of birth control for the duration of their Mounjaro treatment.
Common side effects associated with weight loss drugs, including diarrhea and vomiting, can further compromise oral contraceptive efficacy. If vomiting occurs within three hours of taking a pill, it should be treated as a missed dose. Persistent diarrhea lasting over 24 hours also warrants treating the last oral contraceptive as missed.
Non-oral contraceptives, such as the coil, implant, injection, or patches, are not affected by weight loss medications and do not require additional precautions. Patients with concerns or questions should consult their healthcare provider.
