Flagged off on September 3, this 22-day expedition travels from Kolkata to Ladakh and back, aiming to raise crucial awareness about cervical cancer and HPV vaccination.
The initiative, supported by the Rotary Club of Humanity Kolkata, brings together 20 health advocates and motorcycle enthusiasts. Their journey through cities like Jammu, Kargil, and Manali focuses on challenging the stigma associated with HPV, encouraging open discussions on cervical cancer prevention, and promoting timely vaccination for eligible adolescent girls.
Globally, cervical cancer remains a significant health concern, with approximately 660,000 women diagnosed and 350,000 deaths in 2022. Persistent HPV infections are the primary cause, making HPV vaccination a vital preventive measure, especially for adolescents. This campaign aligns with the World Health Organization's 2030 goal to eliminate cervical cancer, targeting 90% HPV vaccination coverage among girls.
Rotary Club president Sudip Kumar Sarkar emphasized the objective: protecting future generations from HPV infection and reducing future cervical cancer rates. The campaign also stresses that HPV vaccination should complement, not replace, regular screening for adult women, as highlighted by Rotarian Shyamasree Sen.
