16 Feb
Summary
- Mother recovered mobility and independence after severe brain damage.
- Genetic condition caused iron overload, leading to stroke-like symptoms.
- Intensive physiotherapy at son's clinic led to remarkable recovery.

Karen Kerr, 58, has described her remarkable recovery and regained independence after a severe brain injury left her unable to walk. In January 2025, Ms. Kerr experienced sudden symptoms including hand dysfunction, inability to stand, and slurred speech. Investigations revealed brain damage stemming from haemochromatosis, a genetic disorder causing excessive iron buildup in the body.
This iron overload led to stroke-like symptoms and significantly impacted her health, confining her to a single room for four months. Doctors prepared for her admission to a 24-hour care facility due to her critical condition. However, her son Iain Legge and his partner Dionne Harvey, directors of Cortex Physiotherapy, pursued an alternative intensive rehabilitation plan.
In May 2025, Ms. Kerr relocated to Scotland for treatment at her son's clinic. Her rehabilitation focused on neuroplasticity training, enabling her brain to rewire itself. Initially needing a Zimmer frame, she has progressed to walking independently and has resumed driving.
Ms. Kerr is now setting new goals, including returning to horse riding and attending Ladies' Day at Ayr Racecourse in high heels. She emphasizes the importance of self-determination and perseverance for others facing similar health challenges.
