Decatur Morgan Hospital Emergency Medical Services crews are now equipped with advanced blood warmers and coolers, significantly enhancing trauma care. This vital equipment, acquired through the Decatur Morgan Hospital Foundation's Giving Tuesday fundraising initiative, drastically cuts the time required to safely warm whole blood for patients.
Previously, warming blood could take up to 19 minutes. With the new devices, this process is now completed in approximately three minutes. Hospital officials state that this allows EMS personnel to commence administering warmed blood during patient transport.
Tyler Stinson, director of EMS at Decatur Morgan Hospital, emphasized the importance of early blood and fluid warming for critically ill and trauma patients. He noted that warming blood products and fluids before hospital arrival is crucial for managing emergencies, particularly in trauma and shock situations. These devices empower crews to deliver higher-level care sooner.
The foundation highlighted that the addition of blood warmers represents a significant advancement in trauma care for Morgan County and surrounding communities. Noel Lovelace, president of the foundation, expressed gratitude for the community's generosity, enabling EMS teams to access technology that can positively impact patient outcomes in life-threatening emergencies.
