In July 2025, Monty Python legend Sir Michael Palin, now 82 years old, has received an apology from the NHS after he spoke out about the poor treatment his late wife Helen Gibbins experienced before her passing.
Palin was married to Helen for 57 years until her death in 2023 at the age of 80 from chronic kidney disease. During her final years, Helen underwent dialysis at an NHS hospital in London, but the transportation service to take her to and from treatment was often unreliable and inefficient.
"The whole system was very inefficient, the people who collected her were sometimes an hour late. Sometimes, they didn't turn up; it was a very, very difficult period for her," Palin lamented. The transportation was managed by logistics company DHL, though the NHS has acknowledged full responsibility.
In the wake of Helen's passing, Palin has been forced to confront his own mortality. The 82-year-old has made his will, shared his passwords with his children, and had open conversations with his family about death. Palin underwent heart surgery in 2019, making him more aware of his body's vulnerability as he ages.
"I'm 82 now, which is longer than any Palin male has lived for 200 years," Palin reflected. "I keep fit and I'm working, fortunately, and doing some quite difficult stuff, filming and all that. I kid myself that I'm going to be alright, and yet I know that I won't because you feel tired at certain times."
Despite his grief, Palin has found solace in being surrounded by memories of his beloved wife and the support of his family. He hopes his openness about death will help his grandchildren understand the realities of life.
