- Monkey menace is an ongoing safety concern on campus.
Forty-three students at Assam Engineering College (AEC) in Guwahati fell ill after drinking water contaminated by a dead monkey in a hostel tank. The incident on Sunday morning followed the discovery of a monkey in Hostel No. 7's water tank, reportedly deceased since Friday night. Many students experienced vomiting and stomach pain, with some suffering from diarrhea.
Medical attention was promptly provided at the Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital. Doctors from Apollo Hospital conducted blood tests on affected students, who have since returned to classes. The college has cleaned the affected water tank and relocated students to another hostel. This event underscores a persistent issue with monkeys on the AEC campus, a problem the college has reported to the forest department multiple times without a resolution.
The college administration noted that a large monkey population resides on a nearby hill, frequently entering the campus and disturbing students. These animals reportedly tamper with water tank lids, creating a safety hazard. Despite writing to the forest department, the college lacks the resources to effectively manage the monkey menace, which has led to student injuries, including a recent monkey bite.
