Mobile dental clinics are traversing Mongolia's vast landscapes to provide vital oral healthcare to children in remote communities and urban underserved areas. The Misheel Kids Foundation (MKF) leads this effort, braving long distances and harsh weather conditions.
This initiative addresses a critical issue, as approximately 90% of Mongolian children suffer from untreated dental problems. Factors contributing to this include increased consumption of sugary drinks and processed foods, coupled with a lack of basic oral hygiene education.
MKF, founded by Swiss dental hygienist Gabriella Schmidt-Corsitto, has treated over 22,000 children in more than a decade. Their 'dental treks' offer comprehensive services, from checkups to complex treatments, operating in areas where dental services are scarce or nonexistent.
The foundation also establishes dental health centers in Ulaanbaatar's 'ger districts,' providing services and training for individuals to become oral health advocates. Funding for these operations primarily comes from European foundations and private donors, with ongoing efforts to secure local and governmental support.
